Question: Baal HaSulam writes that if people were to discover a little spiritual pleasure, they would agree to cut off their hands and feet seven times a day just to feel it. How is this to be understood?
Answer: It is said that all the experiences of this world cannot be compared to one drop of spiritual pleasure.
If a person were to gather together all the pleasures, all the best moments that he experienced throughout the 80 to 100 years of his life, they would not even be equal in value to one moment of the spiritual world, because a drop of pleasure of the upper world is many times more powerful than all the possible fulfillments in this world.
The period of preparation for approaching the first level is very long because we cannot perceive such wealth, abundance and pleasure all at once. We don’t have the vessels for it. That is the whole problem.
