Blessed Are You Who Created The Worlds….

Posted: Wed, 09 Mar 2011 18:13:30 +0000

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Zohar, Introduction, “The Intention in the Blessing,” Item 16: …For this reason, the blessing that a person blesses the Creator awakens to bestow upon the Creator blessings from above to all the worlds.
Question: What is a blessing?
Answer: A blessing is a special force from above, the force of Bina that influences Malchut. The Creator is called Blessed if I turn to Him from Malchut with the request for the forces of bestowal to come to me, to enter me, and become part of me.
When I include these forces inside of me, it means I receive a blessing, the qualities of Bina that become included in Malchut. According to these qualities, which I received from the Creator, I can call Him Blessed. Otherwise I do not have the same qualities for which I can value and thank Him.
Why do I want to receive these qualities from Bina? It’s so that I won’t curse the Creator, but will bless Him. That is to say, all of the corrections that I try to acquire are not for my own benefit, but only in order to love, to respect, and to bless the Creator.
Therefore, the words “Blessed are You” in the blessings of prayer mean that I have already gone through the corrections enabling me to work for the sake of bestowal, that I have received blessing from Him, and am now in the quality of bestowal and love. And I bless the Creator for this opportunity.

A Trip Around The World With The Book Of Zohar

Posted: Wed, 09 Mar 2011 10:09:24 +0000

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How can we bring our inner movements to match the text of The Book of Zohar?
Answer: Relative to other Kabbalistic sources, this is actually easy to do with The Zohar because the speed and reading of the text are such that all you have to do is feel out how to “flow” together with it. But this does not mean that you are hearing its sound like the noise of a river that flows by.
“Flowing together with it” means that you are trying very calmly, as it is written, “The words of the sages are heard in calmness.” You are going together with the authors of The Zohar without any resistance, arranging your inner motions to suit the sound of the words. If you missed a few words and did not hear them, don’t worry and keep going with the following words. Thus, you continue with the flow like a wooden chip on waves, repeating all of the nuances of the water.
That is how we should enable our qualities, desires, and sensations to flow together with the text of The Zohar as if on the water’s surface, trying to suit this flow, trying to find where these qualities and desires The Zohar describes are inside of us. But we should look for them very simply and easily. The most important thing is to let this flow pass through you. After all, we are just a vessel or Kli through which this entire flow of words has to enter us.
When reading The Zohar, we do not try to activate the mind or discern the inner definitions. Even in places where The Zohar seems to use technical, scientific terms, using the language of Kabbalah, we should also try to let this text pass through the sensations rather than the mind, meaning to try to listen to our own feelings and impressions, trying to feel how every word echoes inside us regardless of the language that The Zohar uses.

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: During the lesson I am constantly thinking about the upcoming convention and it’s hard for me to focus on the lesson. Am I losing something as a result of this?
Answer: Of course not. We always feel the pressure in the process of preparing for such massive events. Once a year we get together at a convention in the United States, and we should see this as a unique opportunity to unite with each other. There is no other opportunity to receive more Surrounding Light, support, and strength to advance than at gatherings such as this.
This is exactly what I personally expect. I remember how when I began studying with Rabash, literally a few months later we traveled to Tzfat together. In a small yard by a little house, all of Rabash’s students gathered who had studied with him at different times and suddenly they wanted to join us. About 40 people gathered, which was a pretty big group before I brought new students to him.
I saw how excited he was by this trip and by being there. I asked him, “What is so special about it?” He explained that these gatherings are the most effective means in our world for spiritual advancement when a person comes in order to unite with others, works for this sake, makes efforts, and desires to receive the forces from others, to gather and absorb them inside of him, to literally drink up this might. And this depends only on him and his sensitivity.
If I prepare for the convention the right way, then when I come there, I receive everything I possibly can. It all depends on me. It is because we are standing in front of Infinity. I can come to the convention and not receive anything, scorning others, and leaving there even colder than before. Or I can come there and be impressed, touched, and inspired. I can absorb so much strength and Surrounding Light that I wouldn’t receive during years of study. Everything depends on my preparation.
Therefore we must already be preparing for the upcoming convention. Before such a huge event, when a person is planning to connect with others, he must experience worry and fear, feeling that he is standing at the threshold of great inner changes. This pressure-filled expectation and preparation is even felt physically.

Create A Human Within Yourself

Posted: Mon, 07 Mar 2011 14:40:23 +0000

Dr. Michael Laitman“Introduction of The Book of Zohar,” Article “Yitro (Jethro),” Item 194: When this one speaks, he stretches the skin of his forehead and those lines are not very visible. He bends his head and walks. His right serves as left, and his left serves as right. He is always sad, gossips, considers himself smart in all his actions, and hateful toward those who engage in Torah.
The Zohar speaks about the forms of connection between us. A “human” within me is my attitude toward the others rather than I myself. By myself, I am not a “human,” but rather a beast, as it is said: “We are all like animals.”
However, if I begin to build relations with the environment, with my friends, in order to position myself under their influence and to reveal the Creator within the connection between us, then the place of our connection is called Shechina. This is where the Creator becomes revealed. A “human” within me is my attitude toward my friends, which I awaken within myself in order to build this place of revelation of the Creator.
Create A Human Within Yourself
Therefore, everyone by himself is not a "human" because to be a "human" means to be “similar to the Creator” in relation to other people, in bestowal and love. In Hebrew the word man (Adam) comes from the word similar (Domeh).
The Zohar speaks precisely about these forms of a "human," the kinds of connection between us, meaning about the Partzuf (structure) of the soul. This Partzuf contains all forms (forces) described above: arms, legs, faces, and so on. These are the ten Sefirot with the 613 desires which we have to correct from egoistic into kind relations between us.
Therefore, when The Zohar is telling about people with certain face features, hair color, palm lines, and other characteristics, it speaks about the connection of each one of us with others, about the types of this connection based on the soul’s type, about the properties of a "human" within us.

Attain It And You Will Receive The Answer

Posted: Mon, 07 Mar 2011 10:30:52 +0000

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Why do you often refuse to answer questions on the actual text of The Zohar?
Answer: What’s the point of answering? A person who attains it receives the answer on his own. But a person who does not attain it has to work on attaining it.
An answer to a question that is perceived by our earthy mind leaves us on the level of this material world, calming us down with false understanding. But this is not a real answer and does not help us. After all, in that case a person does not try to acquire a connection with the Torah, with the Light that corrects him, but wishes to attain wisdom, and that is opposite to our path.
Of course, we have to know the material a little bit in order to be slightly connected to it at least externally, like small children who come in touch with something in our world without understanding it yet. However, we shouldn’t receive answers that extinguish our desire to attain. After all, we are reading the text for the sake of attainment. When we attain it, then we will receive the answer. And that will be the true answer.
Therefore, there’s practically nothing to ask about the actual text of The Zohar, about the names, titles, forces, and angels. What’s the point of it? Who understands it? Who will give you an answer as long as you haven’t revealed it inside you?
Therefore, our entire study is only for the sake of revealing Kelim, vessels, or desires in which everything we study will be revealed.

The Path To The Upper Oneness

Posted: Mon, 07 Mar 2011 09:48:07 +0000

Dr. Michael Laitman“Introduction of The Book of Zohar,” Article “Explanation of the Division of the Fourteen Commandments into Ten Utterances”:  Fourth utterance: “And God said, ‘Let the waters be gathered.’” The third commandment is to know that there is a great God who rules over the whole world, and to unify him daily with a proper unification, the unification of “Hear O Israel,” called “the upper unification.” This is extension of VAK of the three previous utterances into ZA, VAK de Gadlut, Vav de HaVaYaH.
Everything exists in an unchanging state, and all the changes occur only in man’s perception. By correcting his properties, a person attains degree after degree, and “utterances,” “commandments,” or “days of the beginning of creation” change for him. All of it was divided and now changes in his eyes since a person himself, his inner desire, gets reformed.
Desire within us undergoes transformations. They occur gradually, layer after layer, passing through all levels of their Aviut (thickness, coarseness): Shoresh (root), Aleph (1), Bet (2), Gimel (3), and Dalet (4) at each degree.
As we correct our desire, we begin to reveal the Lights, the sources: where this influence comes from, what correction it performs in my soul, what Light becomes revealed, where it originates from, with Whom I connect, Who the Upper One whom I reveal is.
This is a gradual correction of the soul performed by a person. Parallel to it, The Zohar describes what desires (Kelim) enter correction, what Lights become revealed out of a full set of ten utterances, 14 commandments, or seven days of the beginning of creation, meaning seven degrees of Zeir Anpin (ZA), until Nukva and ZA reach a state of the two great lights, the full correction (Gmar Tikkun). Ultimately, we are talking about the stages of our advancement.
The Torah describes the entire process of our correction. In the beginning of the chapter “Beresheet” (Genesis), all these utterances are presented as a summary of everything that subsequently occurs in the entire Torah. And then, from this chapter, as from the initial point of the letter “Yod,” all other parts toward a full HaVaYaH evolve, until the entire narrative of the Torah ends with the word “Israel.”

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Why is it much easier to rise above the repulsion from each other at the big Conventions?
Answer: 1. At the Convention a person is not in his group. He dissolves in an ocean of people with whom he did not have close contact and therefore did not reveal his evil toward them.
2. At the Conventions we do not work on revealing the evil in ourselves, but rather we awaken goodness. However, this goodness comes in spite of the evil that has already been revealed and in order for us to acquire forces for the future.
Therefore, people who do not work on themselves in the group do not feel a drive to come to the Convention. They do not see this as an opportunity to advance. “What will I do there? Jump? Sing? I can just watch it on TV or the Internet at a time that’s comfortable for me!”
In reality there is a big difference between virtual and physical participation at the Convention because in the latter case a person exerts energy, money, and great efforts to take part in it. In addition, prior to entering the sensation of the upper world, we cannot revoke the importance of material contact. Therefore, the Convention is intended for people who desire to come there with the realization of evil they have accumulated from before, as well as those who desire to receive the forces there to overcome the realization of evil in the future.
The Torah talks a lot about how in ancient times people would meet by a well to communicate and establish connections. That is how we should feel at the Convention: like people who have gathered by a life-giving well in a desert, and from that well we can receive the vital forces of Bina (water is the quality of bestowal, the quality of Bina).

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Zohar, Chapter “Yitro (Jethro),” Item 180: …We should look at the forms of people in six discernments, and to know wisdom thoroughly. Those are the hair, eyes, nose, lips, face, and hands, meaning the lines in the hands.
The science of Kabbalah explains all the spiritual qualities using earthly words. That’s because there are no words or letters in the spiritual world, but only sensation, attainment, and understanding. Therefore, we don’t have any other way to express and convey spiritual information and impressions from one person to another. That is why we take words from our world because our world, this earthly reality, is an imprint of the upper reality and everything existing in our world has roots in the spiritual world.
Therefore, when The Zohar talks about the features of a person’s face, his internal organs, or parts of the body, all of this is describing the corresponding forces acting in spiritual space, meaning between souls, inside of their connection. In this way, using “the language of branches,” we convey information about the spiritual world to one another.
This can be compared to electrical forces by which we create an image on a computer screen. Inside the computer there are electrical forces, but for us we use them to depict images we understand.
We can talk about inner electric forces using their external results: graphical terms, colors, and geometric figures. We can name these electrical forces by their graphical images, even though they are not colors, lines, or images. It’s just that in the external manifestation they create these forms for us and we use the names of these forms to name these forces.
Therefore we have to understand that the authors of The Zohar did not engage in physio-mysticism, physiology, or other such things, but wished to describe the inner structure of the soul in detail. A person who is in the spiritual world envisions everything written in The Zohar in the spiritual sense, knowing that it is talking about spirituality. He sees this because the spiritual impression is much more powerful than the earthly one. Therefore, he observes the spiritual picture before anything else.
On the other hand, a person who is only in the material world and for now perceives only the earthy reality on his screen, sees earthly images behind The Zohar’s words.
So while reading The Zohar, let’s try to go from one screen to the other, from the external screen on which earthly images are depicted for us, to the soul’s inner structure. Let us try to imagine the qualities of the soul. And even though we do not understand what The Zohar is talking about, our efforts evoke the Light that corrects us.
Baal HaSulam writes the following in “Introduction to Talmud Eser Sefirot”: Therefore we must ask, why then, did the Kabbalists obligate each person to study the wisdom of Kabbalah? Indeed, there is a great thing in it, worthy of being publicized: There is a wonderful, invaluable remedy to those who engage in the wisdom of Kabbalah. Although they do not understand what they are learning, through the yearning and the great desire to understand what they are learning, they awaken upon themselves the Lights that surround their souls.
Our desire should be not to understand, but to feel this inner spiritual picture. By that very desire we attract Light from there, which corrects us. And then we enter the sensation of this inner world.

Believing The Sages

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How do I combine and properly arrange the three types of desires that I experience here at the lesson: 1) the artificial desire caused by the need to ask for correction for the environment, 2) the artificial desire to place myself in a field that will influence me, and 3) my actual desire to rid myself of the small corporeal problems that appear big to me?
Answer: We need to believe the sages who say that when a person works systematically and with determination, his efforts accumulate into great wealth. There is no other choice: Just keep making the effort.
The results that will come as a consequence will explain and show you everything. There is no answer for you on the path when you do not feel, understand, or are unable to connect anything. You just need to continue.
Right now, you are unable to connect your relationship with the world and the group with your success and with everything that happens, and you don’t link the Creator and Kabbalah with your desire to rid yourself of problems and suffering. Moreover, Kabbalists do not go around promising that Kabbalah will help you free yourself from problems and suffering.
In reality, we have nothing to say to a person who studies Kabbalah. We can only bring him to the realization of the importance of the goal with the help of the group. He will only see the goal when the Light comes and corrects him.
This is because one cannot see anything pleasant and good for his egoism in the spiritual world with egoistic eyes. You can keep telling yourself that this will help you become free of all problems and that you will acquire the world, but this is not the way to advance.
Connect yourself as much as you can to the environment every moment of your life so that it will influence you as much as possible and you will have to connect to it even more. You will receive strength through that.

Life In The Web Of The Universe

Posted: Tue, 01 Mar 2011 13:46:44 +0000

Dr. Michael LaitmanWhile reading The Zohar, you mustn’t forget that it talks solely about relationships between us. The wicked and the righteous, a Saturday eve and weekdays, night and day, the still, vegetative, and animate nature, man, a Temple, a field and a tree, all these words describe only the types of relationships between souls, their connection at the still, vegetative, animate, and speaking levels.
They speak of nothing else beside this because nothing else exists. Within this connection, in the types of it, we experience the world. Combinations of forces tying the souls together draw the pictures of our world on a screen for us. Thus, we perceive reality.
Kabbalistic books describe only the connections between us since there is nothing else to write about. There is nothing else, and the worlds are descriptions of the levels of connection between souls.
There is a formless desire to feel pleasure, and what is described are the stages of its transformation in order to connect with others. By unifying with others, making efforts, and drawing the Light that reforms, discerns, and fulfills, the created being reveals the web of connections between all parts of one integral soul, Malchut of Infinity. That is what we are reading about.
Kabbalists do not perceive anything more. The created being experiences the reality detached from connection with others and calls it “this world,” or it feels ties with others in the forces of bestowal that give it life, and in that case, the upper world becomes revealed to it.
The upper world is relationships with others and all that I find in them. What do I find? It’s the property of bestowal. This is regarded as “to bestow in order to bestow.” Relationships of this type are described as “Do not do to others what you hate.” Later on, these relationships become stronger, and we feel love in them, which is regarded as “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
The relationships of bestowal conducted by the principle of “Do not do to others what you hate” are regarded as the Second Temple, the level of Bina, Mochin de Neshama. The relationships of “Love your neighbor as yourself” are the First Temple, the level of Mochin de Haya.
Everything speaks solely of ties between people. All of the words that we can use, the entire reality that we can reveal, everything is still nothing more than the connection between people.
The lack of connection in which we are presently living appears as this world to us. My vision, my perception in the egoistic net between all, in its minimal degree, is regarded as “this world.” Consequently, I reveal the real, powerful, egoistic connection between us all as the left line, a Klipa (shell, impure force).
However, we don’t have another perception or understanding, another reality and existence, except in the connection between us, no matter whether it’s good or bad. The Book of Zohar speaks solely about the types of this connection.
What else can Kabbalists write about? There is nothing else in reality. Everything that seems to me as the still, vegetative, animate, and human realms, various objects, acts, thoughts, decisions, buildings, furniture, and vehicles, all that we can imagine is human relationships in their correct or incorrect form.

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How can I envision our common Kli (vessel)? What does the group within me mean?
Answer: The group within me is the place where the Creator exists. He organized such a place within me. This why when I enter the group, I seemingly come to my friends, whereas in reality, I enter my inner sensation of the “place.” If I continue to be connected with the group, it will serve me as the mother’s womb, the ark, the place of concealment, salvation, and protection.
This group exists within me. I only mistakenly perceive it as existing outside of me the same way I perceive the entire reality. In order to start sensing the true reality for real, I have to give up my pride, independence, and grandeur so I could become dissolved in the group, the ark, the mother’s womb. Then within it I will reveal the Creator—in my first spiritual degree of the spiritual embryo.

A Guide Into The Depths Of The Soul

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Zohar, Introduction, “General Explanations for All Fourteen Commandments and How They Divide Into the Seven Days of ‘Creation’,” Item 1: …Rabbi Shimon explains the fourteen Mitzvot, which include all 613 Mitzvot, as the seven days of creation include 7,000 years. This is why he divided them into seven days of creation and tied each to its ascribed day. And since they include all 613 Mitzvot, it is worthwhile exerting to keep each day.
What does it mean to observe a commandment (Mitzva)? How do I even know what that commandment is? And what can I do now if I don’t even know what it is talking about?
Nevertheless, I have to read this text with the intention that it will correct me. After all, for now we don’t even know how to connect to the text or extract the spiritual action from it so it would become an instruction manual for us, the Torah, because “Torah” comes from the word “Oraa,” instructions. For it is written, “A man’s soul shall teach him.”
When each of us will have a soul instead of its embryo or spiritual spark, then inside of our soul we will reveal various phenomena. These phenomena will become “my book,” “my Torah,” my revelation, according to the instruction to write the Torah on one’s heart, where the heart refers to all of a person’s desires.
From them we will find out how to advance, how to take the next steps, and will take them inside of us. That is exactly how we will perform various actions inside of us according to the instruction manual.
But for now we are looking at the instruction manual without realizing what the instructions are saying. We do not know what it is talking about because we do not feel what each of them is talking about inside of us, where various parts of our soul are, and what connection between them is.
Therefore, we must only ask and pray to reveal the inner structure of our soul: Where are these desires in the states that are being described, what exactly is the book talking about, and what actions does it describe which we must perform inside of us?
The intention to desire and to attain this is the right intention, which Baal HaSulam describes in Item 155 of “Introduction to Talmud Eser Sefirot”: …through the yearning and the great desire to understand what they are learning, they awaken upon themselves the Lights that surround their souls.”

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What does it mean that the Light discerns one’s state? Does the mind have a role in it as well?
Answer: No, it doesn’t. When the Light discerns my state, I don’t need the earthly mind because it does not add anything. I need spiritual discernments, which come from the sensations of my desires and the Upper Light. I have to feel them, or at least come closer to them, entering the neutral zone between the will to enjoy and the will to bestow.
I can be 1) inside my egoistic desire, 2) at the neutral territory, having come out of my desire and aspiring to attain spirituality, or 3) in the spiritual intention.
When I am at the neutral zone, I don’t understand what is happening to me yet, but still, I act only for the sake of the goal. Then the Light influences me and I go through various states without being aware of them. I cannot tell what is happening the way a baby cannot tell what is happening to him. He is entirely in the aspiration to grow, and with that aspiration he evokes the Light, the force of growth and development. We are the same.
