Make Space For The Creator In The Assembly Of Friends

laitman_260The assembly of friends (Yeshivat Haverim) is the most important action. And this is not only when we gather physically and sit together. Assembly (sitting together) in spirituality means that we do not use our desires to receive but only the desires to bestow (to sit). We restrict our desires to receive and relate to each other only with bestowal.
While preparing for the assembly of friends, I should imagine that I am going to assemble and unite the parts of my soul into one soul, into one spiritual Partzuf, despite all their differences. And the more this Partzuf grows, improving its quality, the more noticeable the internal differences between the friends will become, simply unbearable. But at the same time, we should unite in order to create one spiritual Kli, a Partzuf in which all opposing properties exist and unite above all differences.
From this, it is clear that the assembly of friends is the most important action through which we correct our soul and make a place for the Creator to reveal Himself, and we realize the purpose of creation.
We need to perceive the assembly of friends not as a simple meeting for an hour or two; we need to think about the essence of this action. The purpose of man’s existence, his mission in this world, in the spiritual world, and in his life, this all must be brought together to the assembly of friends so that it takes place only for this purpose.
The assembly of friends helps in implementing all the conditions revealed in each of us and in the whole world. We must not ignore any parameter; we need to attach each one to the one Kli  for its maximum completeness on our level so that the Creator could reveal Himself and enjoy us.1
From the 1st part of the Daily Kabbalah Lesson 1/20/19, Writings of Rabash, Vol. 1, Article 30 “What to Look For in the Assembly of Friends”

Who Is The Book Of Zohar Meant For?

Laitman_065 Zohar for All, Torah, “BeHaalotcha” 58: Woe unto one who says that the Torah comes to tell literal tales and the uneducated words of such as Esau and Laban. If this is so, even today we can turn the words of an uneducated person into a law, and even nicer than theirs. And if the Torah indicates to mundane matters, even the rulers of the world have among them better things, so let us follow them and turn them into a law in the same way. However, all the words of the Torah have the uppermost meaning.
It is very difficult to explain The Book of Zohar to beginners. This is a completely closed book. Its texts seems to be literary or historical, often frightening, mystical.
When I began to study with Rabash, I was offered to study the article “Introduction to the Science of Kabbalah” by Baal HaSulam, which is one of the introductions to The Book of Zohar. But the entire method, the technique of spiritual work, is clearly described in it in the language of Kabbalah and not in the language of feelings.
The Book of Zohar cannot be used as a textbook, it can be used only as material for extra classes for people who are seriously studying Kabbalah.
Question: What secrets are hidden in it?
Answer: It is impossible to reveal these secrets to a person because everything will be unclear to him since he does not have a corresponding mind that must put together incomprehensible things.
The fact is that a person currently studying Kabbalah has an ordinary earthly psychology. He must work on himself until the Light begins to change him a little, and in accordance with this he will differently perceive the material being studied.
Question: Then why was The Book of Zohar written?
Answer: So that you have something to study, that you can change, and in the measure of your changes, feel how the world, which used to seem one-sided, is changing, and now you see it as integral.
Then you will perceive it completely differently: complementary, interchangeable, as one common whole. All the inanimate, vegetative, animate, and human nature will be perceived as one system.
But you will live in it. You will be unable to change something without changing everything else.
The Book of Zohar is a commentary on the Torah. In the Torah, absolutely everything concerning the way of a person and of all humanity is registered from the beginning to the end. Only the one who changes in accordance with the ascent on the spiritual steps attains what is written in it.

If You Do Not Want To Suffer…

Laitman_049.01Question: If there is no punishment in the world, then what is pain and suffering?
Answer: There is no punishment in the world and there is no reward except for the revelation of the Creator’s uniqueness by you and within you.
Question: But what if I do not want to suffer?
Answer: From this you will not escape. If you do not want to suffer, then you must reveal the Creator faster than He urges you to it.

New Life #1072 – Evolving From Nationalism To Humanism, Part 1

New Life #1072 – Evolving from Nationalism to Humanism, Part 1
Dr. Michael Laitman in conversation with Oren Levi and Nitzah Mazoz
Summary
Humanity wanders through waves of humanism and nationalism similar to the breath’s contraction and expansion. From an egoistic point of view, there is a difference between my nationality and the world. When we hear about natural disasters, our reactions depend on the degree of closeness we feel to the people involved. Humanists from generation to generation have related to this philosophically whereas today we require a more practical approach. According to the wisdom of Kabbalah, true humanism is above human nature and requires the acquisition of a unique power. Through education about love and altruism, a person can expand his boundaries from the family to the nation and even to the whole world. A person who develops love embraces the entire world and begins to feel all of nature and the phenomena in it. The more the person rises in love of others, the more he enjoys and feels wholeness and eternity.

Thousands Of Hours Of Unity

laitman_938.03Question: How do we work with the greatness of the Creator that we received at the gathering of friends so that it will keep us until the next meeting?
Answer: I doubt that this meeting once a week is enough.
Rabash wrote articles about the order of the gatherings for those who gather at the lesson every day, and discuss the material before and after the lesson. Here and there, they have all sorts of “five minute catch ups”: in the morning classes, in the evening classes, and sometimes in the middle of the day. Today, everyone has mobile phones so everyone can call each other.
The actual tens meetings should be almost daily. If people use this time correctly, they get thousands of hours over the course of a year. With this amount of collective work, you can succeed very quickly. The main thing is to properly fill in this time, properly use and realize it.

I Want Only One Thing

laitman_249.01I do not work on my sensations and mind, I want only one thing: to be incorporated in others and receive through this inclusion new sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Through the connection with the friend I am now building a man, Adam, similar to the Creator. I do not care about my current feelings because all of them are at the animalistic level.1

New Life #1071 – The Connection Between Human Brains, Part 2
Dr. Michael Laitman in conversation with Oren Levi and Yael Leshed-Harel
Summary
We are all naturally connected in a single system and all of our brains are connected to a single brain. Synchronization between two or more human brains requires a common desire. It is possible to influence a person’s thoughts and desiresthrough telepathy. To read the thoughts of a person, it is necessary to love him very much and communicate with one’s heart and soul. Love cracks the password of one’s so-called computer and eliminates boundaries. It is only in the connection between opposites that we can produce something new.

What Will Happen To The Common Soul If Humanity Dies Out?

laitman_600.02Question: What will happen to the common soul if all of humanity comes to a global catastrophe and becomes completely extinct?
Answer: Do not worry, humanity will not come to total extinction, although a portion of humanity could. Therefore, we need to think about helping people start the process of correction before a problem occurs.
In principle, the state of complete correction already exists in a spiritual form. The only thing we can do is to quickly implement it and be in it.
[239589]
From the Kabbalah Lesson in Russian 9/16/18

A Raft In A Stormy Sea—The Ten

laitman_258The ten is a raft that saves you in a stormy sea. First, you need to grab it and not let go. When you are already holding on to it and even sitting on this plank of wood, you go through all the ascents and descents, lowering your head before each rolling wave, as Rabbi Akiva did escaping from a sinking ship.
It does not matter what kind of waves they are: in sensation or in understanding, bigger or smaller—I accept them only in order to strengthen my connection with the plank. After all, I depend only on it; if I let it go, I will perish.
To grab hold of a raft means to hold onto the center of the ten and not let go, to be connected with the friends and try to see the purpose of creation in the strongest, most internal connection with them. The Creator is there and the secret of my life is there.
Whatever happens, I will not let go of the connection with the friends. All these images that pass before me cannot disconnect me from: Israel, the Torah and the Creator are one. I am connected to the Creator through the ten and everything that happens is intended only for strengthening this connection: Me—the group—the Creator.
We need to treat the ascents and the descents equally and hold on to the center of the group despite all of the states passing over us.1
There is no need to leave the lesson! We exit the place of study physically, but in fact, we do not. The Creator has arranged our lives in such a way that we have different times and all sorts of states. Everything is given for the purpose of correction. But we attribute only three hours for correction when we are in the lesson. This is incorrect. What about the other hours?2
To strengthen in faith means to strengthen ourselves in the force of bestowal. Beforehand, I had some force of bestowal through which I was connected to the group to a certain extent. Now, when there is a disturbance, the desire to receive grows and I break away from the group, do not think about the friends, do not notice them. There is no space in my heart and mind for them.
Now I need to work to get them back into my heart and mind at the new degree above the height of the new egoism. I start working inside the group, studying and performing all sorts of actions in dark, with the help of the friends, as it is written: “They helped every one his friend,” until again I draw the reforming Light that will bring me a new force of faith. I am separated from the old faith; I have already exhausted it.
The force that lets a person work in a group under the conditions of concealment is called “the covenant of salt” (Brit Melach), mutual guarantee. When I fall and lose everything, the group gives me strength. And when I rise, I give strength to the one who fell: I awaken him, support him, encourage him, set an example, provoke him, and cause him to envy. We need to constantly act together with the whole group as if we are connected, burning, and ready to reveal the Creator at any moment.3

Help In Spiritual Work

laitman_962.2Question: Virtual means of communication are very well developed now. Are they revealed at this time because the ego erupted so intensely that we wouldn’t be able to do without them?
Answer: Naturally. Currently we have all kinds of devices that let us be in constant communication with each other. We can correspond, send pictures, talk—anything we want! It erases the distance.
We can see our friends, our Ten, on a phone or a computer screen, and at them same time talk to them as if we are in a constant physical connection. In reality, this connection is physical because we feel it as normal connection.
Therefore, a lot of attention is paid now to the quality of communication. Distance does not matter, it all depends on us.
Of course, the most important thing is internal communication, but it is insufficient. It must be supported by physical connection. Without this, we will not be able to continuously produce internal efforts.
We must listen, see, and understand our friends, admire and  envy them, and feel it all. Otherwise, how are we going to work?

Following Sound Logic

laitman_947Rabash, Writings of Rabash, Article “The Agenda of the Assembly 2”: Therefore, first one must praise the importance of the gathering, and then see what to acquire from that activity. It is as our sages said, “One should always praise the Creator, and then pray.” In other words, the beginning of the assembly, meaning the beginning of the discussions, which is the beginning of the assembly, should be about praising the society. Each and every one must try to provide reasons and explanations for their merit and importance. They should speak of nothing but the praise of society.
Question: Should there first be a word game about the importance of the group?
Answer: This is not a game! Each time you need to start all over again. Why do I exist in this world? For what purpose? How should and can I achieve it? Why in the group? In what kind of group exactly? What kind of work must the friends do to achieve the goal of creation? And so on.
Question: When I am going to an assembly of friends, should this chain always be in front of me?
Answer: If I begin to awaken in the middle of this chain, then it is not a serious foundation for spiritual work. A serious foundation is renewed from the very beginning: “Why did I appear in this world?” Otherwise, how will I continue? From what?
I exist in this world in order to attain the Creator. I can attain the Creator only if I gather the right ten—broken desires that should make it possible to catch Him like a radio receiver picks up a wave.
To do this, we are given guidance and advice about how to set ourselves up like an oscillating circuit in a receiver in order to detect the Creator.
Question: Do you suggest making such preparations both for the gathering of friends and for the lessons, as well as in regular life?
Answer: Of course. This is how I set myself up.
I need a ten. Why am I going to the meeting? It is because in this ten I must reveal the Creator. Otherwise, I cannot attain Him. But for me, revealing the Creator means achieving the goal of life. Therefore, I already have a reason to hurry to the meeting of friends and do something.
Proceeding from this goal, I must reveal the conditions for attaining the Creator in the ten.
Question: That is, everything should be on the level of feelings?
Answer: Even on the logical level. If I have no feelings now, then I am absolutely frozen; there are such periods of time. Therefore, I start to scroll through everything and go by logic again. Logic is like iron; I have nothing else. And so I bring myself to a state when I go and use this opportunity. The assembly of friends is given to me once a week and I must attend it.
I know that I must receive from it how to behave in order to absorb impressions from all my friends that enable me to continue my spiritual elevation.

New Life #1070 – The Connection Between Human Brains. Part 1
Dr. Michael Laitman in conversation with Oren Levi and Yael Leshed-Harel
Summary
There is another level in the perception of reality in which I will be able to understand who I am through your mind, once we are properly connected. The more I think about you, the more willing I am to hear from you since my mind wants to work on the same wavelength as yours. Love is the factor that can influence our understanding of someone more than anything else, just as a mother relates to her infant. All of us are absolutely connected and each person also has a small point of egoistic desire. The connections between our hearts and our minds influence each other. The connection between our hearts is the most important.

Equalize Today With Tomorrow

laitman_276.04The inner Light and the surrounding Light influence us in opposite ways. The inner Light gives us the feeling of the present day, and the surrounding Light gives us the feeling of the future. And in this way, we exist between these two opposing influences.
You must be able to use them. After all, if I feel bad today, this may be for the better in the future, and vice versa, if today I feel good, then in the future it can lead to bad consequences. How can you connect “from good to evil” and “from evil to good,” “from today to tomorrow” and “from tomorrow to today?” We can succeed if we know how to work with AHP of Aliya (Awzen, Hotem, Peh of on the rise).
Raising the AHP and turning it into action, we equalize today with tomorrow. And then there will no evil either today or tomorrow. After all, the desires according to which we separate today from tomorrow are corrected by the Light and filled with it. It turns out that we find ourselves in a world full of Light, in the glow of the Light both day and night, as it is written: “Darkness will shine as Light.”
This opportunity is provided for us by Tzimtzum Bet (Second Restriction). Thanks to it, we find ourselves in the system of opposing Lights: internal and surrounding. And due to the AHP on the rise, we can turn the darkness into a permanent Light.1

Bring Our Broken Soul To The Creator

laitman_276.05When a person studies Kabbalah, his desires are constantly growing. But this is only for the purpose of giving him the left line, raising in him a corrupted desire to enjoy so that he has something to overcome and something to turn to the Creator with. We need a depth of desire (Aviut) over which we can build the screen and the reflected Light.
We tell the Creator with the reflected Light: “Although You gave us the desire to enjoy, we are building the desire to bestow upon it by restriction, the screen, and the reflected Light. And all this is done with the help of the Light returning to the source called the Torah. The Creator clothes in these corrections in the form of the direct Light, and the Creator merges with the creation.1
We must bring our broken soul to the Creator, but first we need to reveal it. The Creator knows that He broke it and prepared everything, but we need to make this discovery, called the realization of evil. We want to unite in order to reveal the Creator between us and we cannot do it because we are broken. It is necessary to bring this broken vessel of the soul to Him and let Him glue it together! And when He corrects the vessel, He clothes in it.
We must come with this vessel and ask for its correction like a small child in tears would bring his mother a broken plate. There is nothing more to reveal in this world: there was one complete soul and the Creator shattered it. Now we need to detect this shattering and ask Him to correct it and then fill it. There are two kinds of actions that we must evoke: correction and filling.2
The heart is a desire that is initially corrupt, black. As it is written: “For the inclination of man’s heart is evil from his youth.” Therefore, it is necessary to correct it to bestowal so that it loves one’s neighbor. Instead of loving itself, the heart will love others. According to the extent to which a person manages to go outside of himself toward his friends and connect with them by building a common Kli with them, the Creator can clothe in them. This is called a corrected heart.
The heart of one person cannot be corrected. But if a ten is united in their hearts, becoming as one person with one heart, in this way they build their spiritual Kli. In one person there can be no spiritual Kli; you need at least two, and best of all, ten.
It seems to us that it is more difficult to connect ten people than two. But this is not the case. After all, the upper Light comes to the ten in a special format. And if it is less than ten, then it is called: “Why have I come and there is no man,” because it is the ten that is called a Man.
However, even less than ten still draw the Light to themselves but not one because a man alone has no connection with the Light at all.3
We do not yet feel that our egoistic desires are standing between us. We just do not touch each other, we pass by as if we are not connected in any way. This is still far from building a common Kli. The common Kli is built based on the fact that we feel a collision, and above it, a connection. After all, the Creator created the vessel of the soul and broke it. And we need to reveal this shattering, the gap between us, and the way we can reduce this gap by being included in each other. Despite our unwillingness to unite, we nevertheless coerce ourselves to get closer and closer, and then there is a coupling with the help of the Light that reforms.4
The revelation of the Creator to the creatures in this world occurs when within a physical Kabbalistic group, in the union of the hearts, the power of mutual bestowal, the power of faith, the power of Bina, the power of the reflected Light in which the upper force is clothed, the Creator, the illumination of Hochma dressed in the Light of Hassadim is revealed.5

New Life #1073 – Evolving From Nationalism To Humanism In Israel, Part 2

New Life #1073 – Evolving from Nationalism to Humanism in Israel, Part 2
Dr. Michael Laitman in conversation with Oren Levi and Nitzah Mazoz
Summary
Israeli nationalism is intended to bring forth love of the whole world. If we succeed in connecting among each other, we will have the power to connect all parts of reality. Subconsciously, we feel that we have a method for bringing the world to perfection but are not realizing it. Since the destruction of the Temple, we have had a big ego, a desire to swindle others, and to succeed at their expense. At our foundation, we were a gathering of 70 nations of the world and only the spiritual force of love connected us. We were strangers gathered in unity around Abraham until an anti-spiritual force developed hatred, destruction, and the impulse to exploit others.
Today, Israelis experience an internal pressure and feel like they could explode since each one has 70 different roots. The wisdom of Kabbalah teaches us that it is up to us to bring love to the whole world. Only the attainment of the upper Light will relax us. This upper Light is a higher energy that exists in the world and embraces all parts of creation as one.

How Can You Communicate Correctly With The Creator?

Laitman_049.03Question: How does one properly communicate with the Creator throughout the day?
Answer: As you wish, the main thing is to not forget.
You can communicate with Him from completely different states: from love, dislike, scolding, or blessing. Do what you want! Try to find Him hiding behind all events; the main thing is to grasp and not lose hold. Try to find such a state inside yourself when you, grasping Him, live with it all the time.
You have no idea how suddenly you will begin to understand that life, like a tangle, begins to unwind in a completely predictable, understandable, and cause-and-effect manner. You will have a connection with the root, with the source of everything that happens to you.

Look For The Middle Line

laitman_944Rabash, “The Agenda of the Assembly – 2,” Article No. 17, 1986: Then they should say, “Now we are through with Stage One of the assembly of friends, and Stage Two begins.” Then each will state his mind about the actions we can take so that each and every one will be able to acquire the love of friends, what each person can do to acquire love in his heart for each and every one in the society.
And once Stage Two is completed—suggestions regarding what can be done in favor of society—begins Stage Three. This concerns carrying out of the friends’ decisions about what should be done.
To the extent that I am committed to the goal, I should also be committed to the means for achieving this goal. The love of friends can be no less that my aspiration to the goal, to the love of the Creator. It must be at least the same.
Remark: Rabash writes nothing about the fact that at the second stage some kind of hostility must arise between us.
My Comment: We never speak about the cultivation of negative feelings, qualities, or actions. We are talking only about the positive. The negative always arises only so that we would strengthen the positive.
Question: Yet, one can attain the Creator only between the point of love and the point of hatred. Is the Creator in the middle between these two points?
Answer: The Creator is in the correct combination between them.
Question: Is there no second point?
Answer: Of course not. We need to look for the middle line because we do not have it and it does not exist in nature. Since it constantly slips away, we need to search for it and find it again and again.

New Life #134 – Israel In The World Media, Part 2

New Life #134 – Israel in the World Media, Part 2
Dr. Michael Laitman in conversation with Oren Levi and Nitzah Mazoz
Summary
Israel needs a new national mission statement and public relations strategy based on connection, equality, cooperation, and love for everyone. The media needs to advance the world toward an integral approach by discussing the flaws in society, the future of the Israeli nation and the role of the Jewish people in leading by example. The Jews need to be pressured by people and organizations from abroad until they understand that they have no choice. The entire country needs to be educated one hour a day, including exams and workshops, regarding their role in healing the world through connection. Egoism has led to a dead end. The American dream based on consumerism and competition has crashed. The middle class has been eroded. The notion of the kibbutz has collapsed. Only a cooperative society can rescue us from the nothingness we are facing. Anti-Semitism and evolution are requiring brotherly love from us all. Equality gives people everything provided we unite with each other. Our survival depends on it!

“Tu Bishvat: Planting the Tree of Life in a Fertile Field“ (Times Of Israel)

The Times of Israel published my new article “Tu Bishvat: Planting the Tree of Life in a Fertile Field
Tu Bishvat symbolizes a very special state in a person’s life, marked in the Jewish calendar on the 15th of Shevat. It is traditionally associated with the “New Year of the Trees,” so you might ask: “How does this relate to me personally?” It is written in the Torah, “a man is like a tree in the field” (Deuteronomy 20:19), and discovering the deeper meaning of this sentence is our key to a fruitful and flourishing existence.
The Tu Bishvat holiday represents the state in which we realize the fruit of our work of planting ourselves in the optimal environment to start growing and settling in a new life with new principles and goals, until we are finally rewarded with the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, the Tree of Life. We reach Tu Bishvat when we discover a world of goodness and perfection, the opposite of the world that we currently perceive.
We do not reach Tu Bishvat all at once. We reach it only after a gradual process of development that begins with a seed, a desire that has an impression from our deepest spiritual root, which must be nourished properly until it grows into a tree that bears the fruit we will harvest: the attainment of the spiritual world of wholeness and tranquility. In order to reap that bounty, our optimum spiritual growth requires the influence of a spiritually supportive and encouraging society.
Similar to a tree that depends completely on its environment, so do we humans. The only difference between the two is that we can move ourselves to a new environment if our current one is harmful, while the tree cannot. Therefore, the first and most important phase of our spiritual development is the recognition of good and evil in our surroundings.
Each of us must perform a self-scrutiny and an examination of who surrounds us to determine whether we are placed in a fertile field, one that will help us advance toward our higher goal of fulfillment above the base earthly level, or whether we’re in poor soil, which distances us from that exalted purpose.
We can reach the desired state when we attain nature’s qualities of love, bestowal and connection. However, such a goal requires us to ascend above our egoistic nature—our narrow, short-sighted lens through which we try to exploit everything and everyone for our own advantage—and acquire an opposite, loving and giving nature where we positively connect to each other. To do so, we need not correct other people. We only need to correct ourselves.
Undergoing this transition from our egoistic nature to the altruistic nature is called a “correction” in the wisdom of Kabbalah. Correction is marked by a change in our attitude toward others, and until we make this shift, the wider, harmonious reality where we are all positively connected will continue to be concealed from us. We currently fail to see this reality where love and bestowal dwells between us because we perceive ourselves and our surrounding world according to our inner egoistic qualities, constantly thinking and acting based on the core question, “What’s in it for me?” When we will change our approach from receiving to giving, we will discover the upper, spiritual world—a world of love, bestowal and positive connection—and suddenly see a new level of existence, one in which everyone experiences balanced, positive and harmonious connections. Nature has conceived this state for all humanity, as it is written in the Babylonian Talmud, “I saw a reversed world.”
In fact, Kabbalists explain that the upper world is revealed as an inverted tree in the eyes of our world. In a field, the more a tree grows upward above the soil, the deeper its roots grow down below the trunk. Trees connect to each other underground through a sprawling network of roots. Similarly, we ascend by deepening our connection with others, because our attitude toward humanity is how we attain the upper spiritual forces.
When we reach such a level of connection, everything we previously perceived as broken will look as if it had been turned inside out, revealing reality as whole and purposeful. This is the state of Tu Bishvat. It is the feeling that Divinity (Shechina) fills the world, the revelation of an upper force that governs everything and gives a sense of eternity and endless fulfillment. This is the fruit of the Tree of Life that we will harvest at the end of our development, when it is ripe and we are ready to enjoy it.

But they also have to make sure that their initiative seems important and beneficial for everyone else in the world. To that end, the World Economic Forum has published six pressing questions to discuss with regards to humanity’s future. Ironically, the public is invited to offer solutions to challenges that the forum members themselves have been creating, yet don’t know how to solve.
Here are my answers to their questions.
1. How to save the planet without killing economic growth?
Undoubtedly, we are killing the planet while also hurting ourselves in more direct ways. The current economic paradigm fails to prioritize our well-being and happiness, and the current measurement of economic growth has no future. I do not see it as “growth” in the first place.
The future of our planet and everyone on it depends on rethinking the goal of our economy from the ground up. We have to initiate a fundamental change of values: from continuously chasing the accumulation of wealth to discovering the fountain of lasting happiness that comes from positive human connections.
Then, thinking about growth as an increase in GDP will be completely irrelevant, since the role of the economy will be to help us focus on making positive connections. In turn, we will have new definitions and measurements for “growth,” and they will not conflict with the health of our planet.
2. Can you be a patriot and a global citizen?
In the not-so-distant future, this will no longer be an issue. We are heading towards an era of global interdependence, where the well-being of each nation is directly influenced by the well-being of all other nations.
As Kabbalist Yehuda Ashlag wrote in his article “Peace in the World,” “Indeed, we have already come to such a degree that the whole world is considered one collective and one society. Meaning, each person draws his life’s marrow and livelihood from all the people of the world, and is forced to serve and care for the well-being of the whole world.”
In other words, humanity’s interdependence is evolutionary and inevitable. It will make clear to us that being a patriot means caring for the interests of all of mankind, as no nation will be able to secure its interests otherwise.
That being said, when it comes to mass immigration, open-border policies such as those put forth by European leaders are a grave mistake. They generate new problems, making immigrants a burden on the host countries much more than a contribution, all the while disrupting the socio-cultural fabric. If the current trend continues, within a few decades, European culture will be a thing of the past.
Rather than trying to pour third world populations into the west, we should help them where they are, so they can provide for their basic needs and develop higher standards of living without eliminating their cultural characteristics. Being global citizens doesn’t mean that everyone should be the same. It means that everyone’s well-being is equally important.
3. What should work look like in the future?
Consider the following scenario: You tell a smart machine about something you need. The machine orders it from a bot that sends the order to another machine that produces what you need, which ends up in the belly of another machine that delivers it to your house.
In other words, there will be very little place for human labor in the future. It’s not a question of whether it will happen, it’s a question of how fast. Therefore, to account for the future of work, once again we have to flip our mindset and ask ourselves what is the purpose of work in the first place?
When we move away from the narrative of cyclical production and consumption, to a narrative of balance with nature and connection among people, the concept of work will change accordingly. In other words, most of the jobs that will require people in the future will be those that facilitate positive connections between families, communities, societies and so forth.
4. How do we make sure technology makes life better, not worse?
The positive or negative impact of technology relies 100% on whether we educate ourselves to internalize and embrace our interdependence, to feel that we are all parts of a single interconnected system.
Self-centered, narrow-sighted people will create technology that will facilitate self-destruction. Conscious people with a connected mindset will create technology that will contribute to all of mankind. It’s that simple.
Therefore, the future of technology relies entirely on changing our values to support our shared future.
5. How do we create a fairer economy?
First, the discussions that will take place in Davos certainly won’t help make a fairer economy. If anything, they will make things worse. In an economy that serves the 1% so well, the 1% will perpetuate it by all means.
Here is a pragmatic proposal: let’s introduce a new, “planetary tax” of 20% on the total wealth owned by corporations, tycoons, and developed countries, for the sake of educating all people to live in a globally interdependent world.
Without such an educational program, we will find ourselves increasingly fighting each other through inequality, injustice, extreme political and social polarization, trade wars and more, all of which can lead to violent conflicts in and between countries.
The cost of implementing such a global educational program would not be very high, and yet, it is the safest investment for the future. The rest of the funds should be invested in creating the necessary conditions for decent life standards in underdeveloped areas, a much better solution than mass migration.
The elite are very aware that reducing inequality will do good for the economy in general and for their positions in particular. And yet, even when their mind understands, their heart does not agree. Their ego doesn’t let their hand reach into their pocket and give some of their wealth to the 99%.
For the very wealthy, money is much more than purchasing power. It is a powerful emotional fulfillment – the spiritual fulfillment of their ego. The only thing that can convince them to work on creating a fairer economy is a change of social values.
Human beings are social creatures and even the super-rich cannot escape their social nature. If our society will position materialism as purely functional, and appreciate contribution to society instead, people will begin to feel ashamed about self-hoarding. What’s more, people who contribute to human society will gain a lofty spiritual fulfillment that is much stronger than money.
6. How do we get countries working together better?
Unfortunately, it cannot happen right away. Nature is pushing the world towards a higher level of integration, one that’s based on a profound and genuine sense of human connection, rather than personal or national interests.
Therefore, any kind of unification we try to do on the surface will fail. If you will, we are headed towards a global kind of “Brexit.” In the near future, I see nations looking more and more into securing their borders and practicing protectionism, with Trump paving the way for many other leaders to follow.
However, this development is for the better, because trying to forge integrations without changing ourselves in the process, means setting ourselves up for greater conflicts.
Think about a bunch of different people who come from broken families or bad neighborhoods. If you put them all together, you’re not going to get a good result. This is the state of humanity today—we all come from a broken home—a culture of unfettered human egoism and lack of human connection.
The founder of the World Economic Forum, Klaus Schwab, was right in warning that “failing to adopt a new cooperative approach would be a tragedy for humankind.”
However, adopting such an approach would mean that we have to change the human being. Nothing less will do. In order to be ready for the new interdependent world, we need to become interdependent in our minds and hearts first.
