Question: It is said that before starting the study of the wisdom of Kabbalah, a person must learn seven sciences. What are those sciences and is that necessary?
Answer: They used to associate these sciences to areas that today are not considered science, such as dance, music, and art. These were sciences of self-expression of the human personality, everything through which a person expresses his perception of his impressions of the world. Through learning and studying human responses to the influence of the world, we study and investigate the person himself. This is science.
It seems to us that through physics, chemistry, and the rest of the sciences we can study and explore the surrounding world. But we are actually studying and exploring ourselves, our reactions, the “instrument” of our understanding, our perception of the world—the way something unknown to us is reflected in us.
Kabbalists spoke about studying seven sciences that explore a person’s response to something unexplainable that acts on him from the outside.
Why is it specifically seven sciences? This is because in addition to the Rosh (head) of the spiritual Partzuf, which is concealed from us (Keter, Hochma, and Bina), there is the spiritual body (Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzah, Hod, Yesod, and Malchut), which are found in us. So we study and investigate the reactions of these seven characteristics to something that we don’t understand called, “our world.” It is in this manner that a picture of our world is portrayed to us.
