“How Do People Discover True Love?” (Quora)

Dr. Michael LaitmanMichael Laitman, On Quora: “How do people discover true love?

We first need to understand that we have no idea what true love is. Until we reach true love, we interpret love in all kinds of corporeal and egoistic ways, i.e., where we primarily benefit ourselves from whatever we picture as love.

True love, however, is completely different. True love is the ability to benefit others, to sense others’ desires and to enjoy via their fulfillment. The realization of true love is by nature contrary to how we define love in corporeal terms.

True love is ultimately the unification of humanity into a single common system. We currently experience this system in its opposite form, through egoistic lenses, where we constantly try to benefit ourselves at the expense of others and nature, and by doing so, feel a certain degree of separation and distance in our attitudes to each other. By aiming to unite above this egoistic state we find ourselves in, we discover our rejection to each other, and eventually arrive at the realization that we need to rise above our differences, and forms bonds of true love. The more that we feel growing distance between us, the more we will develop a sincere desire to bridge this distance with a genuine attitude of love and care.

True love is thus the unification of opposites, when hatred and rejection become covered in a common umbrella of love. The more that we move toward unification above our inborn egoistic distance, then the more we will begin to sense a new kind of atmosphere entering our lives, giving us a much fuller feeling of fulfillment than everything else we have enjoyed to date.

The discovery of true love entering our lives is thus an opening to discover the perfection and wholeness existing in reality. Instead of feeling a narrow and detached sensation of life in our inborn egoistic qualities, we would “click” into a perception and sensation of reality similar to how cells and organs function and feel the whole organism that they are parts of. In such a state, we would feel constant fluctuations between the negative-egoistic and positive-altruistic poles of reality as we would continually cover our differences and divisions with a much greater force of unification. As such, we would feel ourselves in an eternal world where life constantly ebbs and flows.

When we transition from our inborn egoistic mode of wishing to benefit ourselves at others’ expense, to an altruistic mode of wanting to benefit others, we feel our instinctive egoistic impulses as negative forces that we rise above. By rising above the ego, we sense forces of connection, giving and love—the positive and eternal forces dwelling in nature—and complement each other in a common tendency to make that shift.

This fateful shift depends solely on the extent of our unification, where we rise above our differences and divisions and start fulfilling one another. The feeling of mutual fulfillment gives us a sense of eternal life.

To discover this true love, we need only learn how to upgrade our connections, to mutually complement and fulfill one another, and to replace our egoistic lenses where we see flaws in others, to ones where we feel any egoistic impulse as an invitation to unite above the differences.

Metamorphosis Of Love

622.02Question: The altruistic force of love is the most important force in nature since it contains a creative and generative energy that begins, forms, emanates, and creates systems. Why is it called the force of love?

Answer: In our world, love is the attraction of a person to something from which he feels fulfillment, satiation, or something pleasant. He could be attracted to color, sound, shape, or anything else but people. And it’s the same in people.

Question: Very often, we hear from you as well as many philosophers that nature loves us. I am not even talking about the concept of the Creator, which is from the point of view of Kabbalah identical to the concept of nature. What does it mean that nature loves us and that we need to love nature?

Answer: Love is a law of nature. The mutual attraction to perform some type of common function makes it possible to continue oneself, etc. Particularly, we call offspring and reproduction the consequence of love.

Question: Human love is not built upon the good of another, but on one’s own good through the good of another. It is clear that there is no such thing as altruistic love. There is a huge difference between altruistic love, when you think only about the other and how to fill him, and human love. People cannot love just like that, without some self-benefit.

Frequently, our love turns into hate. If I love someone and all of a sudden he cheats on me, then my love turns into hate. Why is there such a small distance between these feelings?

Answer: Because you want to be fulfilled with this object and instead of pleasant fulfillment you get the absolute opposite from it in the end. That is why hatred appears instead of love.

Question: What should happen to a person in order for the feeling of absolute love to manifest in him?

Answer: If you rise above yourself so that no matter how others treat you, you will treat them equally well, then absolute love is possible.

Feel The Shades Of Love

621Question: There are two forces in nature. They can be called love and hatred, good and evil, plus and minus, forces of attraction and repulsion. It is the balance between them that creates harmony. Can you say that love means harmony between two forces?

Answer: It means mutual complementing. A person should simply see for himself that if he loves someone, he wants to give him what he wants, from which he will rejoice. And vice-versa.

Question: You very often use the words “connection” and “love,” and you never get tired of it. Do you feel something different every time?

Answer: Yes. There are new shades every time. Saying the word “love,” I always feel a new fulfillment.

Question: How can we learn this?

Answer: Only through feelings. I have already said that love and hatred are sensory concepts that are not used in Kabbalah. Kabbalah is a science that operates with clear physical definitions.

Love is the force of attraction, hate is the force of rejection. And it can be measured.

“Is There Such A Thing As A “Law Of Love”?” (Quora)

Dr. Michael LaitmanMichael Laitman, On Quora: “Is there such a thing as a “law of love”?

Love is a law of nature.

Everything is born and lives through love. However, hatred is necessary for love to exist because love needs to become established over another property, otherwise we would have no sense of it.

There are thus two contrasting properties in nature that mutually complement and designate one another.

Selfless Love

527.02Question: We cannot attribute the feeling of love to the still, vegetative, and animate levels because they do not have freedom of choice. The interaction of objects at these levels is due to genes, laws, and instincts. We can talk about love only where there is freedom of choice, where there is an opportunity to rise above one’s egoistic nature.

When we talk about divine or absolute, selfless love, then we are talking about love for the property of bestowal and this means one must be in this property all the time. Can we say that to love the property of bestowal is love?

Answer: Yes. At the same time, you treat the other in such a way that none of his bad effects on you prevent you from loving him.

Question: And the property of bestowal, is it in me or in him?

Answer: It is in you. The other person has nothing to do with it.

Question: How does one determine whether a person is loving purely selfishly or if it is altruistic love?

Answer: This is impossible to determine. To do this, you would need to find out whether he loves you for money or if he loves you selflessly. What is he selfless about?

There is no concept related to “love” in Kabbalah. Love is defined as pleasure. The so-called love for one’s neighbor, for the Creator, or for oneself, whether it is egoistic or altruistic love, is determined by the measure of the use of one’s own egoism for oneself in contrast with the use of one’s own egoism for the sake of another. Therefore, we move away from the concept of “love.”

Even when it is said, “love your neighbor as yourself,” this means that just as egoistically as you treat yourself, you should treat others in exactly the same way. That is, as you fill yourself, you should fill another to the same extent.

Launching The Mechanism Of Love

 599.02

In the News (University of Oxford News and Events): “Anthropologists at the University of Oxford have discovered what they believe to be seven universal moral rules.

“The rules: help your family, help your group, return favours, be brave, defer to superiors, divide resources fairly, and respect others’ property, were found in a survey of 60 cultures from all around the world. …

“Dr Oliver Scott Curry, lead author and senior researcher at the Institute for Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology, said: ‘The debate between moral universalists and moral relativists has raged for centuries, but now we have some answers. People everywhere face a similar set of social problems, and use a similar set of moral rules to solve them. As predicted, these seven moral rules appear to be universal across cultures. Everyone everywhere shares a common moral code. All agree that cooperating, promoting the common good, is the right thing to do.'”

Question: What does Kabbalah say about the moral code?

Answer: Kabbalah says that all of the above points are rules of egoistic human interaction. Of course, they must be observed, but they have nothing to do with the upper laws.

Answer: Kabbalah says that all of the above points are rules of egoistic human interaction. Of course, they must be observed, but they have nothing to do with the upper laws.

At the animate level, they are observed automatically. And a person, since he or she is an egoist and capable of harming others much more than any animal, needs these principles. It would be nice if they were observed.

However, this is neither the task of Kabbalah nor its domain. Kabbalah calls for observing other principles: the principles of love, when we do not need to be told to act one way and not another.

For a person who feels love for his neighbor in himself, all these codes are natural and one cannot act differently. You cannot write a book of laws on how to deal with a baby for a mother. She does not need it; she feels, understands, and does everything purely for the benefit of her child.

Question: Do you think that it is possible to summon such a force of nature that would trigger the mechanism of love in a person, like a mother to a child?

Answer: Yes. That is what we must do. And then there is no need for any moral codes. One should not have to constantly refer to a book of laws to see if he is doing something right or wrong, something he may be convicted or punished for.

Question: We consider the criterion of moral education to be people’s actions and their motivations. Do you think there are any other moral criteria?

Answer: I would say that the real criterion for morality is the existence of the upper force and its highest principle of love for everyone.

“Imagine A Better World, It Can Become A Reality” (Linkedin)

My new article on Linkedin “Imagine A Better World, It Can Become A Reality

John Lennon, who was murdered forty years ago today, imagined a common world without borders, without greed and without hunger, one world that is all love—and his message spoke to the hearts of masses of people. The idea of a more tolerant, equalitarian and embracing world still resonates today.

A dream of global love lives in everyone, so even in this time when everything is exploited for commercial purposes in a rough and alienated world, we still prefer to see movies where love prevails and to hear mostly love songs. All of culture all over the world revolves around the theme of love, and if hatred occasionally appears, it comes as an ugly counterpoint to contrast the beauty of love. It is natural. Every person has no more inner desire than a bond of love. It causes us to aspire to it through all the materialistic layers of the time and environment we live in.

So the world Lennon imagined is not utopian. A world full of love is a beautiful and good goal and it should find its place among us if we first just aim for it. Not a love of flowers woven into the hair and birds chirping. There is nothing wrong with them, but a deeper and realistic experience of love is built with the core material of humans. It is called hatred. That is how the world was created, with two sides of the same coin, love and hatred, interacting all the time until they achieve balance.

Love begins with a situation where two people reject and even hate each other, and without erasing the differences and ignoring the gaps, they build a mutual agreement on top of their divergences. This is a technique that exists in nature called “Love will cover all crimes.” One who manages to love like this without expecting anything in return, like nature does, will always have a burning heart full of joy of life.

We do not have to wait for others to start loving us some day, it all depends entirely on the person. If we want to be unconditionally loving, if we learn how to get out of ourselves into others, then beyond all imagination we will discover a world without limits for ourselves, a world without greed and without hunger. Such a person will find the inner power that sustains the world and connects everything into one.

“How Do I Love Myself?” (Quora)

Dr. Michael LaitmanMichael Laitman, On Quora: “How do I love myself?

Show people how to find happiness in their lives.

By focusing on the fulfillment of others, their happiness and fulfillment will become your own.

We cannot detach from society, so in order to make the best of our connection, we need to see our own happiness in helping and guiding others to achieve happiness.

By aiming to love others without regard for ourselves, we will come to understand that this is self-love.

How To Love Yourself?

294.2Question: It is widely believed that if you don’t love yourself, no one will love you. A slightly less discussed opinion is to love others, you need to love yourself. And even less discussed, but perhaps more valuable: to love yourself, you must first love others.

How to love yourself?

Answer: There is only one way out: try to do to people what they want or what is really important to them. Show people how to find happiness. This will be your happiness and the happiness of all; a person cannot disconnect himself from others. It is necessary to make sure that by showing or drawing people to happiness, you see your happiness in it.

Question: That is, literally to love others regardless of yourself?

Answer: Yes. From this you will understand that this is self-love.

Society As An Individual

259.01Question: The wisdom of the crowd is a beautiful term. But in real life when we encounter a crowd at stadiums, during protests or social unrest, we see that it is guided by the lowest impulses.

Is there a method to use the potential wisdom present in the crowd and turn it toward a positive direction?

Answer: I think that this is possible only if we make an image of an individual from the crowd. We must unite people who are opposite and far from each other in character, aspirations, understanding, etc. to achieve a common goal for which they can annul themselves and use their egoism for the benefit of unification. When their connection reaches such a unity they will succeed.

Usually we are faced with a contradiction between an individual and society: make the individual prevail over society or the society suppresses the individual. But here we need to make society a person so that it gathers all the elements of the individuals that it consists of into a single collective image.

Question: What does it mean to make society a person? Each person is an individual with different goals and desires.

Answer: When people come together to achieve a single goal they try to use everything each of them has to achieve this goal. Then there are no contradictions between them. They unite with each other over a very strict principle: over all contradictions, even over hatred, love will prevail.

True Love And Perfect Family

919Question: What is true love?

Answer: True love is absolute trust, impeccable support, self-sacrifice, and confidence that you are treated the same way.

Question: Throughout the development of mankind, the concept of family has changed greatly. What is an ideal family today?

Answer: An ideal family is the same as ideal love. It is built on top of all the problems, with them, and in spite of them. Therefore, if people knew how to create bridges over problems and keep them safe, then true love is created. Love is a consequence of a very hard work over one’s own and other people’s shortcomings.

Question: What does it mean to live above problems?

Answer: Knowing all the problems, we try, without closing our eyes to them, to respect the other, value him or her, and be connected with each other without forgetting about our problems.

“Why Is Almost Everyone Becoming Blind Due To Hatred?” (Quora)

Dr. Michael LaitmanMichael Laitman, On Quora: “Why is almost everyone becoming blind due to hatred?

While hatred is bursting at the seams today, it has always been latent within us. Hatred blinds so many of us today precisely in order for us to learn how to open our eyes above the hatred, and see the world through new lenses of love and kindness.

Moreover, hatred sweeps throughout humanity today, which is precisely so that humanity as a whole learns how to rise above hatred with love and unity.

Humanity has reached a very significant transitional phase in its development. Our global interdependence and interconnectedness has become painfully evident together with our rising hatred and divisiveness.

We find ourselves in this paradoxical entanglement so that we see how, on one hand, we have reached tightening global interdependence and interconnectedness without any special strategizing or planning to bring about such a state; and on the other hand, we find ourselves increasingly hateful and disconnected in our attitudes to each other.

Currently, the most apparent example of our “external connection versus internal disconnection” scenario comes with the coronavirus: a global pandemic that has forced populations around the world to adhere to similar conditions in the struggle against it.

However, while we simply find ourselves in such global circumstances without any special strategizing or planning, and where the more we connect externally, the more we find ourselves hating and detaching from each other internally in our attitudes to each other, then the sooner we will reach a very significant self-examination: where is our free choice and free activity in such a process?

The answer: it is in our motion to positively connect to each other, to develop ties of love and kindness above the innate hatred and estrangement.

We have reached a point in human development where, with a little guidance, we can reach the realization that if we fail to actively love and positively connect to each other above our involuntary hatred toward each other, then the hatred will blind us, consume us, and lead us to various tragedies, so that we learn how nothing positive results from blindly following our hateful impulses.

We need to dust the dirt away from the treasure that we’re so close to discovering. By seeking how to develop ties of love and kindness above the innate hatred we feel toward each other, then we will reveal newfound happiness, prosperity and confidence that we never would have dreamed is possible.

We just need to raise our sensitivity a little, to feel how the hatred flaring up within us is not an emotion that we should follow through with, in order to inflict pain upon others, and ultimately, also to ourselves; rather it is an invitation to become conscious and aware human beings in the fullest sense of the term: to make conscious moves in elevating love, kindness and unity above the hatred, and by doing so, unlock a new reality and discover a whole new world of fulfillment.

We can expect nature to surface more and more hatred and divisive attitudes within us, and while it does, we would be wise to build a society that supports each other to rise above those involuntary nudges from nature, and build a new world—one where we construct new bridges of positive attitudes among each other, and by doing so, discover no less than perfection.

“A Time Of Hate, A Time For Love” (Linkedin)

My new article on Linkedin “A Time of Hate, a Time for Love

Our sages wrote about our time in many places, such as in Masechet Sanhedrin, Masechet Sotah, and Tikkuney Zohar. They wrote that in our time, “Insolence shall soar … the face of the generation is as the face of the dog, righteous shall be cast away, authors’ wisdom shall go astray, and righteous shall be castaway.” Indeed, we are living in a time of insolence, conceit, mutual cancellation, but mainly hate.

But we are not living in a bad time. The hatred between us has been hiding within us all along, but circumstances have exposed it. Now that it’s been revealed, it is calling on us to mend it, to patch up our aversion with care and compassion, and build bridges of love above our hatred for each other. And since the whole world is going through this process, it is a sign that the whole world is ready to mend all hatred into love.

The human race is unique. We have a vocation—to consciously build a society whose members feel as one, united whole. That oneness will lead us to a new, expansive level of awareness: awareness of the entire universe, and beyond. This is why humanity has been growing increasingly connected.

So far, this process has been happening “on its own,” without our conscious participation. In order to launch the final stage, where all of humanity becomes connected, we must all participate. This is why today’s blows, such as the coronavirus outbreak, are global in nature, to impel us to act as one on a global level and develop global consciousness.

Nature cannot do the work for us, or we will not become conscious. It can expose the shattering, the hatred among us, but it cannot build the bridge of love. This is our task, the task of our generation. The manifestation of hatred is nature’s calling on us to manifest love. If we delay our response, it will only call on us more forcefully by revealing more hatred. If we embrace the calling and join the process, then love will cover the hatred and fill us with such joy that we never knew existed.

But it will not be the end of the process. To develop us even further, nature will reveal to us even deeper and more vicious hatred within us that we currently can’t see or feel. It, too, will emerge only so we may cover it with love. As the process continues, we will rise to ever higher levels of connection, care, and love, until we are all truly as one.

This is why a time of hate is always a time for love, to build love above the hate.

Ascending The Spiritual Levels

613Question: Does a person have to feel death 125 levels before he fully enters eternal life?

Answer: No, not 125, but 124 levels, the 125th level is already the eternal life. You need to separate from the previous level 124 times in order to ascend to the next level. But it is not felt as a loss. It is felt as a necessary release in order to free yourself for the future filling. This process also exists in science, and you need to constantly empty and refill yourself.

“If You Want To Love, Prepare For Hatred” (Medium)

Medium published my new article “If You Want to Love, Prepare for Hatred
Si vis pacem, para bellum (If you want peace, prepare for war) said the Latin author Vegetius. Likewise, if you want love, prepare for hatred.
The movies show love as a constant flow of warmth, care, and affection between people. But the movies are wrong. Before every positive emotion there is preceded a negative one, which triggers the onset of the positive. Just as night precedes the day, hate precedes love. The only exception to that is a mother’s love, but that’s because the mother perceives her baby as part of herself. But with any other person, to develop real emotions, we must constantly shift between hate and love in different manifestations and varying intensities.
It turns out that the fact that I have been made privy to my hatred toward this or that person allows me to discover who I am and what I have inside. In fact, I should be grateful to that person.
In fact, this is the principle that sets all of creation into motion. The heat waves and cold spells, the floods and the droughts, the hate and the love, all these are alternating displays of hate and love.
There is a purpose behind them: Their growing intensity, especially when it’s on the negative side, prompts us to look for their source. Why is there so much hatred? Why is nature so cruel? Why am I never satisfied with what I have? Why is there no peace? Why am I afraid? When you try to answer those questions, you find that they come from the same invisible source, and that source is nature, or simply, reality.
Every single mineral, plant, animal, or person, thought, desire, or word is created by nature. Now, if nature is the source of everything, then everything is part of nature, part of the whole. And just as there are days and nights, there are people I hate and people I love. So just as there wouldn’t be days if there were no nights, there wouldn’t be people I love if there wouldn’t be people I hate. In fact, I wouldn’t be able define what I love, what I hate, who I am, and who I am not were it not for all those things that I regard as negative. It turns out that I, with my limited vision, see them as negative, but they are not; they are opposite from me so that I will be able to learn about myself and nature. Were it not for them, I would be clueless about my whole existence.
It turns out that the fact that I have been made privy to my hatred toward this or that person allows me to discover who I am and what I have inside. In fact, I should be grateful to that person. The wisest of all men, King Solomon, called this concept, “Love covers all crimes” (Prov. 10:12), where the crime is hatred and love covers the hatred once we discover that our hated object is actually a gift we have been given. At that moment, alienation dissolves and love and gratitude emerge.

If The Ego Is Not Harmful…

Laitman_511.01Question: What does egoism mean?
Answer: Selfishness is self-love. It’s not such love as when I think about simply being, but when I love myself beyond what is necessary for existence.
Question: But if the Creator sends me all thoughts, then what is my egoism?
Answer: Naturally the Creator sends you selfish thoughts. He does not hide it. He says: “I created selfishness.” And then He adds: “And I gave a technique for correcting it.”
Question: Where does the root of the need for comfort come from?
Answer: From the same egoism. Selfishness does not want any difficulties. They are a waste of calories, mental and physical strength; it does not appeal to any living organism since any living creature seeks a state of rest. And mechanical objects gravitate to this.
Question: What will happen to places like Las Vegas that  are built only to receive worldly pleasures?
Answer: In principle, there is nothing wrong with that. If I do not harm others, and at the same time do not cause them hatred, then all these toys can be completely harmless.
As children constantly play games, so adults play the same games. Only adults are interested in playing with each other for money, so that there is some excitement.

“Are You Aware That Love Is All We Need?” (Quora)

Dr. Michael LaitmanMichael Laitman, On Quora: Are you aware that love is all we need?
In an era when social division and hatred is soaring, and when authorities and human reasoning fail to contain the surging negative emotions, the world definitely needs a shift to a whole, inclusive and absolute form of love.
It is common to think of love as an illogical sensation that emerges seemingly out of thin air, and that there is no real reason to love each other.
However, the power of love is all that can bring us together upon our divisions, and guide us to a more positive world.
We are developing into times where we will feel on our flesh that love is a necessity, that without love, life will become increasingly painful, and with love, we will rise to a whole new harmonious dimension that we’ve never experienced before.

Two Kinds Of Love

laitman_565.01Question: How can the principle “love your neighbor as yourself” be fulfilled if I love my neighbor with selfish love, but I must love him altruistically?
Answer: Indeed, these are two kinds of love. But you can love another person more than yourself if you begin to realize that to love another is the same love, only at the next level, global, integral, eternal, perfect. And to love yourself means that you love only at the animal level.
Therefore, it is impossible to compare love external, integral and internal, linear, selfish. When both types of love arise in a person, he begins to love eternity, perfection, and the world more than his animal body.

“How Would You Define Love?” (Quora)

Dr. Michael LaitmanMichael Laitman, On Quora: How would you define love?
Love is a quality, force and longing to fulfill the desires of others, which is directed from the person outward.
How is it possible to fulfill another person’s desires?
It is possible if we understand their desires.
If we have shared habits, thoughts and opinions with others, then we know how to fulfill them and express our love.
If we lack understanding of their desires, then we should aspire to have desires that are similar to those whom we love, i.e., to build an inner model that matches their desires.
Building an inner model through which we can understand the desires of others grants us the ability to give them fulfillment.
We can then understand our own feelings when we receive the same kind of fulfillment, so we know how to fulfill them.
In the wisdom of Kabbalah, such a state is called “equivalence of form.” That is, by equalizing qualities with others, we achieve a state of unification, and love is the sensation of that unification.
