“You Shall Not Covet The Silver Or Gold, Lest You Be Ensnared By It”

Torah, Deuteronomy 7:25: The graven images of their gods you will burn with fire; you shall not covet the silver or gold that is upon them and take it for yourself, lest you be ensnared by it, for it is an abomination to the Lord, your God.

Silver represents the quality of bestowal, and gold represents to bestow in order to receive. Like in the pure vessels—that is, the vessels of bestowal—we have a small state, the Light of Hassadim, and a big state, the Light of Hochma, and in the impure desires (Kelim, vessels), there are the same states.

Question: What does it mean to be ensnared by coveting the silver and gold statues of gods?

Answer: As soon as you begin to work with the attributes of bestowal, you can get into states where you are welcomed, rewarded, and praised, and you will sell yourself for it. While feeling yourself allegedly in the quality of bestowal, you, in fact, are ensnared.

This also happens in our world. For example, as soon as a politician achieves some sort of a position, he immediately ceases to think about others and cares only about himself.

Before his appointment, he shouts that he stands for the welfare of women and children, for equality, for special benefits, laws, and so on. Having achieved a seat in parliament, he does the opposite, he votes against the things he fought for. After all, if this is realized, how will he advertise himself in the future? How will he win over his voters?

In other words, in the government, he must work against his promises so that he will have an opportunity to use them in the next election.
