Question: According to the wisdom of Kabbalah, profit and loss are assessed according to the pleasure or suffering that a person feels. What does a person draw away from and what does he hate?
Answer: If a person draws away from something, then he has the opportunity to value the closeness, but if he simply gets close to something, he doesn’t feel it as something special, as something that he receives from above. Therefore, all our motions, our attainments, the spiritual essence that develops in us, are made of ascents and descents. We need to understand very clearly that there are no ascents without descents. We are like a pendulum moving in amplitude from side to side.
